Shadow Wing Ranch Equine-assisted Learning program is an outreach that provides development of life skills, social-emotional support and character education for able-bodied children (ages 5 and above). We offer tri-level partnerships (1 child, 1 trained volunteer with 1 horse) as a connection to build healthy relationships and support for learning. Each session is facilitated by our Equine Specialist in Mental Health and Learning (Horse professional) and Education Specialist.
Development of life skills occurs through various guided (non-riding) horsemanship activities. Those skills are often about Communication (verbal and non-verbal), Problem Solving, Boundaries, Bullying Prevention, Responsibility, Teamwork, Leadership, and more. Character development activities include Kindness, Self-Control, Patience, Perseverance, Compassion, Stewardship and more.
Fun agricultural activities may occur to further strengthen a bond with their partner and others – be it a new friend, a foster parent, or sibling. Those activities may include gardening, crafts, woodworking, animal husbandry, and devotionals for those interested.
We look forward to serving our community by providing this unique program to children and their families. The welfare and safety of children and our horses are paramount at Shadow Wing Ranch. Confidentiality, freedom from performance, friendship and a sense of belonging are all cornerstones as well. We want all children that come to Shadow Wing Ranch to know they are loved and accepted just as they are.
